Despite their appearance, the dunes are not a natural desert. They were formed in an area previously used for sand mining. After mining stopped, rainwater collected inside the excavated pits while wind and weather gradually shaped the surrounding sand.

The area has become a popular photography destination, with viewpoints and simple installations positioned around the dunes. The colour of the water varies according to the sunlight, so visit on a clear day if possible. Early morning and late afternoon provide softer light and more comfortable temperatures.

There is limited shade, and the sand becomes extremely hot around midday. Bring water, sunscreen and suitable footwear. Although the Blue Lake may look inviting, visitors should not assume it is safe for swimming. Former mining pits can have unstable edges, uneven bottoms and unexpected changes in depth.

You will generally need between one and two hours here. The dunes are most conveniently combined with the Sebung River, a seafood lunch or an afternoon in Lagoi.

2. Explore the Mangroves on the Sebung River or Kawal River

A mangrove cruise reveals a quieter and wilder side of Bintan Indonesia. Once the boat leaves the jetty, roads and resorts disappear behind dense vegetation, exposed roots and nipa palms.

Possible wildlife sightings include kingfishers, macaques, monitor lizards, crabs, snakes and mudskippers. Sightings are never guaranteed, however, and travellers should be cautious of operators promising encounters with particular animals.

Daytime cruises provide better visibility and are generally more informative. Evening tours concentrate on fireflies and the atmosphere of travelling through the forest after dark. Firefly activity depends on weather, moonlight and environmental conditions, so displays vary from one night to another.

The Kawal River is a useful alternative for visitors staying around Trikora Beach. Tours here tend to be smaller and less commercial, although schedules, prices and boat standards may be less consistent. Excursions are commonly arranged through local hotels, drivers or independent operators.

Choose Sebung if you want convenience, organised guiding and easy access from Lagoi. Choose Kawal if you prefer a quieter excursion that fits naturally into an east-coast itinerary.

Bring insect repellent, rain protection and a waterproof bag for electronics. Avoid feeding wildlife, playing loud music or encouraging the boat operator to approach animals too closely.

3. Discover Tanjung Pinang and Its Museum

Tanjung Pinang is the capital of the Riau Islands province and one of the best places to experience everyday life in Bintan Indonesia. Unlike Lagoi, it is a busy working city filled with markets, temples, mosques, traditional coffee shops and wooden restaurants built over the water.

One of its principal cultural attractions is the Museum of Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alamsyah. The museum occupies a former colonial-era school building and presents the history and cultural heritage of Tanjung Pinang.

Its collection includes traditional clothing, ceramics, household objects, fishing equipment and exhibits relating to Malay customs. The museum is relatively small, but it offers useful context for understanding the region’s maritime history and cultural connections.

Some descriptions may be written primarily in Indonesian, so having a translation application can be helpful. Opening hours may change during holidays, and visitors should confirm the schedule before travelling.

After the museum, walk around the waterfront and central market. Tanjung Pinang is also an excellent place to try regional food. Look for gonggong, a local sea snail usually boiled and served with dipping sauce, as well as otak-otak, fish soup and grilled seafood.

If you have a full day, take a short boat ride to Penyengat Island. Once an important centre of the Riau-Lingga Sultanate, the island contains royal tombs, historical ruins and the striking Sultan Riau Grand Mosque.

4. Spend a Slow Day at Trikora Beach

Trikora Beach stretches along the eastern coast of Bintan Indonesia. Rather than a single continuous beach, it consists of several coastal sections separated by fishing villages, granite formations, small resorts and roadside seafood restaurants.

The atmosphere is considerably less polished than Lagoi. Fishing boats rest in shallow water, local families gather on the sand and simple food stalls serve meals without resort-level prices. It is a good choice for travellers seeking a quieter and more independent beach experience.

Swimming conditions depend on the tide and the particular section of coastline. During low tide, the sea can retreat a considerable distance, revealing rocks and seagrass. Ask your hotel or driver where the best swimming conditions can be found that day.

Trikora is also a base for snorkelling, diving and excursions to nearby islands. Before reserving an activity, confirm whether the quoted price includes boat transportation, equipment, life jackets, lunch and marine charges. Do not simply ask whether safety equipment is available, inspect its condition before departure.

Water visibility changes according to wind, rain and currents. If the weather is poor, postponing the excursion is usually better than paying for a disappointing trip.

Consider staying overnight rather than visiting briefly. Accommodation ranges from basic beach cottages to comfortable boutique properties, and the coastline is particularly peaceful around sunrise.

5. Relax in Lagoi, but Leave the Resort Occasionally

Lagoi is the principal resort area in Bintan Indonesia, offering landscaped beaches, large swimming pools, golf courses, spas and a wide selection of water sports. It is designed to make short holidays easy, and there is nothing wrong with spending part of the trip doing very little.

Depending on the resort, activities may include kayaking, paddleboarding, cycling, jet skiing, wakeboarding, archery and ATV excursions. Lagoi Bay is another option for a walk, a casual meal or sunset outside the private hotel compounds.

Convenience comes at a price. Meals, drinks, spa treatments and transportation generally cost more in Lagoi than in Tanjung Pinang or local villages. Activity prices may also exclude taxes, transfers or equipment charges, so request the final amount before booking.

To control costs, reserve accommodation that includes breakfast, use complimentary hotel shuttles where available and compare excursion prices with those offered by reputable local drivers.

Lagoi works best when used as a comfortable base rather than the entire destination. Enjoy the beach and pool, but leave enough time for the mangroves, Tanjung Pinang, Trikora or the Busung Sand Dunes.
